Youga School Ceremony
On October 20, 2009, Steve Stine, COO of Etruscan Resources Inc., and its subsidiary, Burkina Mining Company, in partnership with Absolute Africa, presented to each child attending Youga School, a satchel filled with school supplies (paper book, pencil case with pen, pencil, sharpener and eraser).
Social Commitments
Since Etruscan first began operations in Niger in 1994, the Company has been committed to making a positive contribution to the social, environmental and economic conditions for all its employees, their families and the communities in which they work. This commitment is not tied to the commencement of commercial production and profits - it begins the day the Company sets foot in a new country. The Company's corporate philosophy has always been that natural resources belong to the people of the developing countries in which the Company works and that the Company should conduct itself accordingly as a "guest" in these "host countries".
West Africa
Niger
Health - One of the Company's most successful projects is the "CSI John et Margaret Savage de Touré", a medical clinic in Niger offering primary health care services to a rural population of approximately 15,000. The clinic was designed and constructed under the guidance of the Company's advisor, the late Dr. John Savage. The clinic continues to provide much needed health care through the cooperative efforts of the Company, the State of Niger, Rotary Club of Dartmouth, Rotary Club of Wolfville, Health Partners International and the John and Margaret Savage Humanitarian Fund.
Education - In partnership with Rotary Club of Dartmouth and Rotary Club of Wolfville, the Company has
arranged funding for the renovation and expansion of the local school in the village of Bossey Bangou,
located approximately 10 kilometers from the Samira Hill Gold Mine in Niger. Since the Company first became involved with the school in 1995, enrollment has increased from 50 students to 450 students with almost half of the student body being female.
Burkina Faso
Health - In 2005, the Company completed a refurbishment of the medical clinic in the village of Youga, located adjacent to the Company's Youga Gold Project in Burkina Faso and completed the construction of a separate maternity ward. RMB Resources Ltd., the arranger of the financing for the Youga Gold Mine Project, generously donated US $50,000 to be used for social projects at the Village of Youga. The Company has allocated these funds to assist with upgrading the supply of potable water to the existing medical clinic and the newly constructed maternity ward. The Company regularly ships medications purchased at a discounted price from Health Partners International to the Youga clinic. The Company has funded and organized the supply of food, medicine and other supplies to the Sandba orphanage located near Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. In 2007 and 2008, the Company funded the air shipment of medicines to support the campaign against neglected tropical diseases ongoing in Burkina Faso.
Education - In 2007 and 2008, along with its partners, the Company arranged funding for the expansion of
the Youga School. The Company regularly provides the school with much needed stationary supplies and food supplements. In 2008, the Company administered the logistics related to the delivery of a full container of medical, school and household supplies to Youga valued at approximately $300,000, which was donated by the Rotary Club of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Social - The Company has also funded the building of an outdoor market place, to allow the Youga village to become the commercial center of the region.
Mali
In Mali, the Company has worked with its joint venture partner Resolute Mining Limited to repair water wells in the village near the Company's exploration activities. The Company has participated in a women's microcredit program and is also contributing funds to an aids clinic, AFASO, in Bamako, the capital of Mali. In Mali West in the village of Kantela the Company has donated two moto-ambulances for medical evacuations, constructed a storage granary and drilled a new water well for the village.
Côte D’Ivoire
In the village of Agbaou, located five kilometers from the Company's Agbaou gold deposit, the Company constructed two houses to be used as teacher residences, in an effort to attract and keep trained teachers. The Company has also funded the repair of the Agbaou village water well, has constructed a community meeting hall for the village elders and has donated a manioc grinder to support women's business initiatives.
South Africa
The Company has likewise applied its philosophy of social responsibility in the locations in which it operates in South Africa. A health clinic located in the Bakwena Ba Mogopa village adjacent to the Tirisano Diamond Mine was officially opened in late 2003. The clinic serves the local community and was a cooperative effort, with the Company donating all building material, local community members carrying out the actual construction and the Department of Health supplying all necessary equipment and staff training.
The
Company has facilitated the installation of a permanent computer laboratory at the school in the village and an internet café and training center was established at the local community center. An adult education program has been fostered through the community center. The Company has undertaken a number of successful agricultural initiatives in South Africa with both the Mogopa and the Bakwena Ba Mare A Phogole Communities.
As a result of a crop diversification program initiated in 2003, Mogopa farmers have benefited through the introduction of sunflower and peanuts to supplement traditional maize production. The Company has sponsored a skills transfer program whereby the local farmers gain important knowledge in farming methods and equipment maintenance.
The Company embraces the spirit of Black Economic Empowerment as set out in the South African Black Economic Empowerment Charter and intends to continue to focus on those grass roots social initiatives that will have the longest lasting impact upon the communities surrounding its exploration and development activities. In addition to health and educational programs, these will include skills development programs for workers, mentorship programs and funding of bursaries.
Working Together To Make A Difference
Etruscan recognized early on that, while its ability to contribute financial resources to its various social initiatives is limited, its well established in-country presence and networks allows Etruscan to act as the facilitator and coordinator to identify needs within communities and the catalyst to bring partners together to provide funding. Etruscan is also able to provide the people to oversee the completion of these social initiatives and to continuously monitor the projects to ensure the long term sustainability.
